Rosh Chodesh means “Head of the month” and refers to the celebration of the new moon that occurs every month. The Jewish calendar operates on a partially lunar calendar and so the celebration of the new moon has been a significant way to mark the passing of time. Historically, when women and men held different societal roles, the holiday was seen as a “gift” for women based on a variety of texts and their accompanying commentary. Today, many women gather to reclaim this association through a proud commitment to egalitarian principles and a celebration of advancements in women’s rights.
This Rosh Chodesh group is an ongoing gathering of women who meet to study around the celebration of each Rosh Chodesh, or new month. Each month, Rabbi Avrin prepares a text based on a theme that is chosen by the participants. Together, the group explores the texts and how we relate to the themes, each other, and our inner lives. The study is rich and the atmosphere is supportive and communal. We meet during the work week around the lunch hour in Minneapolis.
